Prevent Scams

Get the NPN. Hang up. Look it up. Call back.

Scammers spoof caller ID. Licensed agents cannot hide from a National Producer Number search.

Trust is essential before you give anyone your personal information. Most consumers do not realize how easy it is to verify an insurance agent through a state insurance department website. All you need is the agent’s NPN — National Producer Number — assigned to every licensed agent.

The callback method

  1. Ask the person for their full name and NPN. Kevin Garvin’s NPN is 523679.
  2. Tell them you will call them back. Then hang up.
  3. Open your state’s insurance regulator lookup. For Florida that is licenseesearch.fldfs.com. Kevin has non resident licensing in other states with the same insurance companies.
  4. Enter the NPN. Confirm the name, the business address, and the phone number. Kevin’s listed number should match (850) 215-7001.
  5. Review how long the license has been active and which companies the agent is appointed with. That is the real experience record — not a website claim.
  6. Call the number from the regulator’s site, not the number that just rang you.

Because scammers can spoof the number on your caller ID, the callback after an NPN search is what protects you. The same method also protects you from AI voice clones and fake “marketplace” calls.

What the lookup should show for Kevin

  • Name: Kevin Garvin
  • NPN: 523679
  • Address: 1104 Magnolia Ave, Panama City, FL 32401
  • Phone: (850) 215-7001
  • Licensed since 1982, many carrier appointments

If a caller refuses to give an NPN, pressures you to enroll on the spot, asks for payment to the agent personally, or will not let you call back — stop. A legitimate agent can wait.

Rules and regulations change faster than ever. A good agent will double-check complicated situations instead of firing off a canned answer. Be wary of anyone who is in a hurry to enroll you without understanding your full situation and giving you time to review full plan info they send you and let you review before they enroll you. A caring professional agent will be happier if you take the time to learn about coverage, a “Here today, gone tomorrow” call center worker will not.
