Pick a dental plan you can actually use at your dentist

Annual maximums, waiting periods, and networks decide whether a dental policy helps — or just collects premium.

Dental coverage is separate from most medical plans. Typical designs cover preventive visits at little or no cost, then pay a percentage of basic and major work after a waiting period, up to an annual maximum.

Pros

  • Cleanings and exams are usually covered richly so you actually go.
  • Spreads the cost of fillings, root canals, and crowns.
  • Some plans build toward a higher annual maximum if you stay enrolled.

Cons

  • Waiting periods on basic and major services are common.
  • Annual maximums cap what the plan will pay in a calendar year.
  • Cosmetic work and some implants may be excluded or limited.
  • Missing-tooth clauses can deny replacement of teeth lost before the policy.
